More Information and Tips about Furniture Refinshing

Sanding: After stripping away the old finish the furniture must be sandpapered. While hand sanding is time consuming, belt or disc sanding can do the job quickly. This must be done thoroughly as the quality of the final finish will depend on how well the sanding has been done.

Filling: To achieve a smooth finish, cracks and grooves in the wood must be filled. You must use a grain filler of the appropriate color. Work the filler into the grain, scrape away the excess filler and let it dry.

Sealing: Sealers prime the wood for the final finish, preventing the wood from absorbing stain unevenly. After applying it to the wood, allow it to be soaked for a few minutes, then wipe away the excess with a rag.

Staining: Stains are of different types and can be oil-based, water-based or gel-based. Apply with a rag and wipe away the excess after allowing the wood to soak in the stain. While water-based stains stain the wood well, gel and oil-based stains do not. One step stains allow for the application of stain and color at the same time. Though convenient they may obscure the grain.

Final finish: You can use a water-based, oil-based or lacquer finish for the final finish. While water-based finishes are easy to use, oil-based finishes are more durable. A lacquer finish looks good but requires a bit of skill to apply. The final finish can be strengthened with a wax paste. It will complement the finish and give additional protection.

Refinishing strengthens and renews wood. Your office furniture appears as good as new after repair and refinishing.
